Working in collaboration with Willmott Dixon, John Perkins Construction delivered a two-storey extension and refurbishment of Hutton Moor Leisure Centre in Weston-super-Mare. The £2m+ scheme includes a state-of-the-art fitness centre, a sleek new dance studio, and floodlit all-weather pitches and tennis courts.
The plans to revitalise the leisure centre for North Somerset Council were carried out to a tight programme of 31 weeks. To add to the logistical challenges, the leisure complex remained open to the public throughout the works. Fortunately, the John Perkins team was able to rise to the occasion, meeting tight deadlines and ensuring disruption to leisure centre patrons was kept to a minimum.
As well as finishing the extension and refurbishment works to a high standard, John Perkins Construction also redeveloped the leisure centre’s existing, under-utilised grass pitches. They worked closely with Sportfields Ltd to not only create first-rate external spaces for local residents to enjoy, but also safeguard the surrounding environment, including a nearby wooded area. Over 250m of tree protection fencing was used to form a ‘wildlife corridor’, while the design of the specialist pitch lighting ensured light-spread into the wildlife corridor was prevented.
As a result of the works, the leisure centre has received a new lease of life, plus plenty of good reviews from patrons, who are now able to work up a sweat in style.
Client: North Somerset Council
Value: £2m+ Extension
Duration: 31 Weeks
Type of contract: Competitive Tender
The working relationship and project went very well. It was challenging at times. However, we always knew it would be, due to tight deadlines and the need to keep the building operational at all times. Apart from a few small snagging issues, it has been an enjoyable experience and I would like to thank Graeme [Young] and Dwaine [Henderson] for their commitment to the project.
