About Us

John Perkins Construction is an award-winning construction company, established in 1992, which operates out of two key centres in Bristol and Newport.

With turnover in the order of £12–13m, we have an expanding portfolio of projects across South-West England and South Wales, including work for both local and national clients. These schemes range from new build to refurbishment and restoration, within the private, non-profit and public sectors.

We’re known for our partnership approach and early involvement with the client team. Our quality management and ability to ‘make it happen’ on time and to budget means we consistently offer the best value for our clients — leading to both negotiated and competitive contract wins.

Investment in our business and our people is key. We offer strong project management and people skills with high-quality workmanship. All of this is delivered by specialist teams with the proven experience and training to meet specific client demands.

Making It Happen

Our company values mean that, on every project, we can ‘make it happen’ for our customers, people, business, supply chain, community and society, and the environment. Here’s how we do it.

Making it Happen for our... Customers

We’re always striving to create a positive experience for our customers and add value at every stage. Here’s how we make it happen:

Long-term business relationships

We’ve forged strong relationships with regional organisations, including Willmott Dixon, Kier, BAM Construct, UWE Bristol, University of Bristol, Kingswood School and YMCA, earning their trust and repeat business.

Strong communication skills

Our team is consistently praised for being friendly and approachable. We like to buck industry stereotypes by being switched-on and available throughout the project. Our involvement in every project starts early and goes well beyond the handover period.

Going beyond compliance

When it comes to project considerations around Budget, Time, Quality, Health & Safety and Environment, we don’t settle for simple compliance. Our work reaches ‘performance beyond compliance’ status.

Considerate Constructors

Our Managing Director, Rupert Perkins, is an Ambassador of the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS). We’re also proud winners of CCS National Site Awards, including the Most Considerate Site (£1m-5m category) accolade.

Right First Time approach

We have a ‘Right First Time’ ethos, using higher quality components with a longer life to deliver better cost effectiveness wherever possible on every project.

Making it Happen for our... People

We recognise that, in order to deliver great work to our customers, a happy, motivated team of people is essential. Here’s how we make it happen:

A great place to work

By looking after our staff, and providing a good work/life balance, we’re repaid with loyalty and long-term commitment to the company.

Skills training

We invest heavily in ongoing training to help our staff to meet their full potential — whether it’s improving communication and leadership, or meeting the changing demands of the industry.

Our culture is to support learning while working. As a member of the CITB Industry Funding Committee, Rupert Perkins, Managing Director of John Perkins Construction, has been able to help to shape the Skills and Training Fund, allowing huge numbers of businesses in the industry to support their teams and improve their skills.

Financial security

With turnover on course for £10m, resulting from steady organic growth, our staff know they’re in safe hands. Profits are typically reinvested within the business, in order to maintain growth and stability.

Excellent Health & Safety record

Our Health & Safety record speaks for itself: no RIDDOR reports, Improvement Notices, Prohibition Notices or Fees for Intervention in the last five years.

Equal opportunity employer

We hire staff from a variety of backgrounds, because we believe diversity makes for a stronger company and a more balanced business.

Pride and passion

Above all, we aim to foster a sense of pride and passion in all of our staff. This is reflected in our superb testimonials and award-winning on-site teams.

Making it Happen for our... Business

By positioning ourselves as the contractor of choice for both long-term partners and new prospects, we’ve been able to rapidly grow our business and remain highly in demand. Here’s how we make it happen:

First-rate reputation

Our clients have called us “tip top people, couldn’t do more to help”, demonstrating “high-quality workmanship” and “communicative, collaborative” working.

Sustainable profits

We typically retain over 50% of our profits in any given year and continually reinvest in the business to ensure we have the right skills and expertise.

Repeat business

The vast majority of our projects are the result of repeat business. Completing work to such a high standard that our clients want to work with us again is at the core of our ethos.

Recommended without reservation

UWE Bristol, The Corsham School and Kingswood School are just a few of our clients so impressed with John Perkins Construction that they’d recommend us without hesitation.

Award-winning

Recent industry recognition includes being named Building Contractor of the Year: England (Turnover Under £15m) at the Construction Awards of Excellence 2020; four Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Awards (including the Most Considerate Site – £1m-5m category accolade); and two Building Safety Group awards.

Making it Happen for our... Supply Chain

Our supply chain isn’t separate from the company; they’re a key part of the John Perkins vision. Here’s how we make it happen:

Working with select partners

We work with a small, select core of subcontractors from each trade and bring them into the John Perkins fold, creating a collaborative way of working. In turn, this approach creates excellent-quality workmanship and best value for money for the client.

Early involvement

Wherever possible, we involve our supply chain at project design stage, to make sure they’re part of the process from start to finish.

Shared values and success

Our ‘making it happen’ mission statement isn’t just ours; we apply it to our supply chain, too. If our subcontractors are willing to buy into our values, we’ll bring them with us on the journey and share our success with them.

Continual knowledge sharing

Our door is always open to our supply chain. We run an annual seminar for our core subcontractors, to keep them up to date with the direction of both our business and the wider industry. We also involve them in our staff training and project meetings, treating our supply chain as part of our company.

Mutual respect, mutual benefit

By embedding our subcontractors at the heart of our business, we ensure they benefit from our growth just as much as we do.

Making it Happen for our... Community and Society

We carefully consider the social and economic impact of every project. Our aim is to use our presence to enrich the community. Here’s how we make it happen:

Providing a net positive

We don’t believe that having construction work done needs to cause a feeling of dread. Instead, it can be a source of interest and an opportunity to learn, which is why we always try to ‘give back’, by running educational events to get the local community involved in the project.

Good neighbours

We pride ourselves on being ‘good neighbours’ during every construction project. This means minimising the impact on the surrounding area. Whether it’s noise, dust, hours of working, or light pollution, we keep it to a minimum. All of this forms a key part of our high CCS scores.

Considerate Constructors

Our four Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) Awards (including the Most Considerate Site – £1m-5m category accolade) aren’t just puff. We consistently achieve scores in the 39-45 range (‘Excellent’) in our CCS evaluations.

Helping the next generation

Our company takes a particular interest in helping young people begin careers in construction, by giving talks at local schools, participating in mock interviews, and attending career fairs.

Local company, local impact

We’re proud of our Bristol roots and we use a strong local supply chain and recruit local employees and apprentices. This local focus ensures the money our clients spend with us is redistributed locally wherever possible.

Charity sponsorship

As well as undertaking projects for charities like YMCA and Bath Cats and Dogs Home, we also sponsor local heritage events, school initiatives, and give donations to charities. Recent charities supported by John Perkins Construction include Mind and Band of Builders.

Making it Happen for the... Environment

Our clear environmental policy aligns with industry codes of best practice. Here’s how we make it happen:

Aiming for zero waste

We achieve consistently low levels of waste on site. Typically, 95–98% of our site waste is reused or recycled.

No air and water pollution

Our ‘good neighbours’ approach extends to ensuring the local community is never affected by air or water pollution resulting from one of our sites.

Lowering the impact of our vehicles

Following a review of the environmental impact of our company vehicles, we greatly reduced our fleet and eliminated older, inefficient vans.

Considerate Constructors

Our Managing Director, Rupert Perkins, who oversees our Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, also serves as an ambassador of the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

Industry-leading standards

We’ve achieved accreditation to both ISO 9001 for Quality Management and ISO 14001 for Environmental Management, and we use procedures aligned with BSRIA Soft Landings.

Environmentally-conscious suppliers

We work with social enterprises wherever possible, including AquAid for our office water cooler. AquAid has used its profits to bring water to over two million of the world’s poorest people.

Our mission is to ‘make it happen’ for our clients by working collaboratively – guided by our core values of honesty, openness, integrity and flexibility.
